DEFENSIFE DRIVING COURSE

Defensive Driving Course

Objective

Horizon institute  offers fresh and refresher’s defensive driving course for Light and Heavy Trailer/Trucks/Tanker Drivers. This course aims to increase driver’s road safety awareness and reduce the vehicle operating costs through the application of defensive driving techniques and practices. It also aims to improve the safety and performance of the driver and enhance their Professionalism whilst encouraging positive attitude. The course is specially designed for drivers who have never had any formal tuition in defensive driving or drivers who need to brush up their driving skills.

Duration of the course: Two days (4 hours per day, day1 theory, day 2 practical)

 

Course Outcome:

 

What delegates bring back to the workplace?

 

a) Demonstrate a basic knowledge of safe steering technique

b) Demonstrate the practical ability to perform emergency braking and controlled

    Braking.

c) Demonstrate good attitude responsibilities towards safety on the road

d) Demonstrate vehicle positioning on the road and skills to avoid crashes

e) Demonstrate and perform pre & post vehicle checks

f) Maintain a safety zone around the vehicle in all traffic conditions

g) Control vehicle movement

 

Option 1 Theory Only

 

The theory session looks at the causes of accidents and what the driver can do avoid being involved. This is largely about developing driver attitude and behavior. The theory session will last half a day and we cover the basics of the road driving system, the theory will be relevant to the problems that the client may be having at present.

 

Discussion – Group Experience

 

Introductory discussion to establish experience of group members, to identify potential hazards and examine aspects of driving which they like or dislike

 

Option 2 Theory and Practical Driving

 

For this course to be effective the driving theory has to be reinforced with practical driving experience. Each driver will receive at least a supervised commentary drive in addition to observing a fellow driver and have a demonstration by a qualified instructor.

 

Discussion –Group Experience

 

Introductory discussion to establish experience of group members, to identify potential hazards and examine aspects of driving which they like or dislike, The course leader will develop this into an examination of what the groups perception of defensive driving is and will explore the possible benefits of driving in a way which anticipates and compensates for risks by approaching hazards in a systematic way.

 

Practical

 

The practical session starts with an eyesight and vehicle check. The vehicle check is aimed at making the drivers realize that is an important of their day to day safety. The driver will then drive for about 20 minutes so that we can get a feel for their style and habit. Then the instructor will give a commentary drive, this will demonstrate how far ahead he is planning, observation techniques, anticipation with a pull and push steering method
